Stay Healthy this Season!
With Winter comes rain and cold temperatures.
It is especially important to keep yourself dry and warm.
Start today by incorporating cinnamon into your diet!
From a Chinese medicine perspective, cinnamon has a warming effect on the body. It dilates blood vessels and helps promote circulation, this can sooth a sneezing fit or stop a pesky runny nose. It also has antibacterial and antiviral properties, that can relieve a sore or ticklish throat at the onset of a cold.
According to this study from NIH, cinnamon may also improve blood glucose levels and help type 2 diabetes! This season, spice things up with some Good Earth or Chai tea (not latte), or simply add a dash of cinnamon to your regular morning coffee!
But what about those holiday sweets?
Sugar and alcohol will increase dampness and inflammation in the body,
this can cause mucus, and puffiness, and just plain old feeling awful.
Help compensate for holiday sweets by incorporating vinegar into your diet! From a Chinese medicine perspective, vinegar’s sour flavor acts as an astringent to tighten tissue and help reduce inflammation (mucus, and puffiness). One of my favorite new products is a Cinnamon-Pear Balsamic Vinegar, available locally at Amphora Nueva in Berkeley, CA. Try pairing this vinegar with persimmon slices, or adding it to sparkling water for a non-alcoholic cocktail! For more product details and recipe ideas, visit their site!
