Coronavirus: 10 Early Symptoms
Posted on Jan 26, 2020
Are you feeling under the weather and worried you have the coronavirus?
Symptoms of the coronavirus are very similar to the flu. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says early symptoms include:
- feeling unwell
- runny nose
- sore throat
- sinus pressure
- lower-respiratory tract infections which can turn into pneumonia or bronchitis
The overlap with flu symptoms “makes coronavirus difficult to diagnose,” says infectious disease expert Amesh A. Adalja, M.D., senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. People can die from coronavirus when they develop complications like respiratory failure or hypoxia (a condition where your body doesn’t get enough oxygen) secondary to pneumonia, Dr. Adalja says. Some people have had myocarditis, which is inflammation of the heart, he adds. People who are immunocompromised, the very young, and the elderly are the most at risk of serious complications of coronavirus, the CDC says.
So what can we do to prevent getting the coronavirus? We work to keep our immune systems strong!
One of the most important things you can do to keep your immune system strong is to get enough sleep. All the studies done say 7 to 9 hours per night is mandatory for optimal health. While you sleep, your body heals at a cellular level and clears illness. So make it your daily goal to get to bed earlier, turn off your screens, relax, meditate and drift off into good sleep.
Chinese medicine also tells us to boost our Yuan Qi, the source of our strength, vigor and vitality. Eating warm temperature foods like chicken soup and using warm spices like cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, cumin, coriander, chili and cayenne are wonderful ways to support your Yuan Qi.
Calcium rich foods support your white blood cell (WBC) production. Your WBCs help fight bacteria and viruses. Try adding WBC supportive foods like almonds, sesame seeds, salmon, sardines, beans, lentils, calcium-fortified soy products, spinach, kale and figs to your diet.
Remember: Acupuncture and herbal supplements can increase the effectiveness of your immune system so you can fight off the coronavirus or other cold/flu bugs. Come into the office if you are experiencing any early symptoms and we will work to boost your immune system.
