Areas of Expertise

Dr. Wonson takes a holistic approach to examining and treating patients, balancing nutrition, emotional health and environmental factors with alternative medical practices such as chiropractic care, acupuncture and acupressure. She measures her success only by the well-being of her patients, who consistently attest to increased mental and physical energy, repaired bone and tissue injuries and relief from pain.

Following are just a few of Dr. Wonson’s areas of expertise:

Founded on the Greek words “cheir” (hand) and “praxis” (practice), chiropractic is based on the understanding that good health depends on the normal functioning of the nervous system, including the spine–a series of movable bones that stretches from the base of the skull to the middle of the hips.  Eliminating irritation on the spinal nerves via the  spine and/or other extremities of the body can cause the body to operate more efficiently and effectively.

Treatments usually involve an “adjustment,” a specific manipulation that applies pressure to the areas of the spine that are out of alignment, or do not move properly within their normal range of motion. To further promote good physical and mental health, Dr. Wonson also places an emphasis on nutrition and exercise programs, as well as lifestyle modifications that promote well-being and reduce stress.

Based on medical practices that originated in China more than 2,000 years ago, acupuncture and acupressure are ancient techniques designed to restore the flow of energy or qi (pronounced “chee”) throughout the body, thereby alleviating painful symptoms and promoting good health. How do acupuncture and acupressure techniques work? In the most basic of terms, the human body has a meridian system that controls the flow of energy to the central nervous system and major organs. Like electrical currents running through a home, this energy may be turned on, off or even be short-circuited.

Dr. Wonson applies pressure to strategic points, replenishing and balancing the flow of energy throughout the body. These points are stimulated by applying pressure with the hand and fingers (acupressure), or by the gentle insertion of very fine needles (acupuncture). Dr. Wonson specifically selects key pressure points according to the individual patient and required treatment. Both acupuncture and acupressure are entirely painless procedures, and only disposable needles are used, which are promptly and properly discarded after a single use.

Often administered following a traumatic injury or surgery, physiotherapy restores the physical function and performance of the body to help patients achieve their highest quality of life.

Dr. Wonson incorporates a broad spectrum of proven physiotherapy techniques to restore muscle function and increase strength. Her extensive evaluation process includes a thorough assessment of pain and movement patterns, joint function, reflexes and sensation, as well as contributing factors such as poor posture, muscle imbalances and other potentially problematic habits. Dr. Wonson then works closely with each patient to prescribe a comprehensive rehabilitation program designed to heal the injury and prevent recurrences. Physiotherapy programs often include a variety of specialized techniques, such as massage, stretching, hot and cold therapies, exercise, taping or bandaging. Therapies for muscle recovery, pain relief, injury prevention and improved physical movement are also stressed.

Good nutrition plays a crucial role in obtaining and maintaining good health.
Yet while dietary intake is one of the easiest health factors for the patient to control, modern medical practitioners often overlook nutrition when treating pain or illness.

As a fully certified and accredited herbalist and nutritional counselor, Dr. Wonson incorporates dietary needs harmoniously with chiropractic care, acupuncture and other holistic treatments to enhance the healing process and strengthen immunity. Her dietary prescriptions fall into three categories: general nutritional recommendations; vitamin supplements to be taken at regular intervals in specified quantities; and herbal remedies that are specially formulated to enhance specific areas of the body. Depending on a patient’s condition, Dr. Wonson may prescribe raw herbs that can be steeped into a tea and sipped at home.

While Western medicine often takes a reactive, symptom-based approach to healing, preventive health care encompasses a wide realm of measures designed to stop injury, illness or disease from occurring in the first place.  After carefully evaluating key lifestyle and health factors, Dr. Wonson works closely with each patient to promote healthy living, nurturing environments and the cessation of harmful habits. Education is a focal point of individual treatment, and is specifically designed to inspire, motivate and educate. From strengthening muscles and increasing flexibility to maintaining a balanced diet and fostering a calm, well-rested mind, Dr. Wonson remains committed to a single goal: to help patients stay healthy.
